New York State Senator Jessica Ramos
From October 2019 to September 2020, I worked with New York State Senator Jessica Ramos (Queens, NY) as her communications director, leading all aspects of bilingual communications including media relations, social media management, digital and print newsletters, photography, and graphics. I coordinated press inquiries, pitched stories, and organized press conferences in New York City and in Albany. I launched a new visual branding kit for the Senator and streamlined the production of graphics for events, legislative updates, commemorative posts, infographics, and more. At the peak of the global pandemic, I spearheaded the Senator’s multilingual outbreak communications by building up team of translators and producing graphics in English, Spanish, Bengali, Mandarin and Tibetan. I facilitated this interview for the Senator's summer City & State NY Magazine cover story in 2020.
I collaborated with artist Caryn Cast to put together an informational animated series of graphics about Senator Ramos' Mark-to-Market billionaire's tax bill. These graphics were used among a coalition of organizations who supported the legislation and were also use to promote demonstrations.
For Pride Month 2020, I designed and wrote the copy for a weekly series of posts highlighting NYC LGBTQ heroes.
I spearheaded the design and distribution of a community-focused, rapid response resource guide for our district to access at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis.
To combat the Trump Administration's active efforts to deter immigrant participation in the 2020 U.S. Census, I led the content creation for our months-long campaign to encourage census participation, which included a videos series and graphics with stats, myth-busters and invitations to Census-related events.
I created a visually-appealing format to provide updates on the Senator's legislative victories in a way that was informative and accessible.
Part of my role was to prepare the Senator for press conferences and rallies, as well staff her, photograph the events and post on social media.
I facilitated the Senator's participation on Dr. Phil to discuss bail reform at a time when the New York State Legislature implemented progressive bail reform.
In the first six months of the pandemic, we pivoted away from in-person events and adapted to hosting virtual conversations between the Senator and other city and state government agencies in order to provide answers to our constituents.
I supported the Senator in her role as Chair of the Senate Labor Committee by designing timely graphics to help New York workers impacted by the COVID19 pandemic.
I designed/created graphics to celebrate national news and inform our local community.
I researched and designed this graphic to support the #SaveSYEP campaign to prevent New York City's Summer Youth Employment Program from being defunded in the summer of 2020.
During the pandemic, our office launched a free food initiative that supported local street vendors in exchange for meals to feed the community. In addition to leading communications and press for this 13-week-long initiative, I created a spotlight series to share the vendors' personal stories.
I collaborated with New York city and state agencies to make sure crucial local updates were translated and accessible for our community. This is an example of an MTA service update that I translated and posted across our platforms.
I created this graphic using a basic Canva template during the beginning of the pandemic to inform New Yorkers about COVID best practices. This was a part of our office's increased language access for the non-English-speaking members of our community.
I launched the #SeenIn13Counts campaign to encourage census participation in our district, which is one of America's hardest to count districts.
I researched and created a Juneteenth explainer for the Senator at a time when the Black Lives Matter movement was reaching a peak in visibility in Spring/Summer of 2020.
I worked with translators to create graphics to celebrate the holidays of the different cultures we represented in our district. This is a Bengali New Year post.
I worked with several translators to ensure this crucial information about unemployment was translated into different languages.
I created this graphic using publicly available data to highlight how communities how communities of color were being impacted early on during the pandemic.
I created this Equal Pay Day graphic to highlight the pay discrepancies between men and women, and between women of different races.
